Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
This is probably one of the biggest areas in all of our lives that we have to develop within ourselves. Many personal and romantic relationships are struggling or breaking down because of lack of development of this basic vital skill. More and more we are seeing that the work force wants to be seen, consulted and interacted with, as part of the team. Many senior managers and executives struggle deeply with this area. It is a skill that can be learned!
Emotional Intelligence Counselling
Actually, emotional intelligence should be called feelings intelligence. By far the largest section of the population is severely lacking in this area of development. Developing higher levels of emotional / feelings intelligence (mastery in the collection of social, interpersonal, reactionary, self-awareness, awareness of others and their feelings through your sensitivity, leadership, relationships and self-management skills) has been proven to be the single most powerful thing you can do to advance your career, professional and personal relationships (romantic and otherwise), and overall happiness once one understands what and how feelings work. Believe me, many say “Oh I know about that” and when tested, they suddenly don’t know nearly as much as they thought they did. Once they become proficient at it, they are amazed at the difference and how fulfilling, and how effective life can be for them. Many state afterwards that they wish they had learnt this as far back as school, as it would have made a world of difference! Actually many even say, they wonder how the passed school without this knowledge!
If you are struggling in some of your key relationships or simply want to master your interpersonal or leadership skills, then learn more about what is possible through our amazing feelings program.
More on Emotional Intelligence
Emotional Intelligence (E.I.) is the general catch phrase for a field of study that is relevant to all of us, because it relates to the most important skill we use every day. And whether you know it or not, this skill determines how well you know yourself, how well you deal with all that happens to you and how you respond, and how well you deal with others - are vitally important to your success. In essence the better you know yourself and your internal workings of your feelings the better you will operate in your personal and professional life. Many do not realize that their lack of emotional / feeling intelligence is actually creating havoc in their lives everyday! The lack of emotional intelligence often leads onto to feelings problems such as depression, isolation, addiction, lack of motivation, lethargy, bi-polar depression, to name but a few. Change their EQ / EI and everything changes miraculously!
Plain and simple, all available evidence clearly shows that you cannot achieve extraordinary levels of success (personal, family, friends, and work), without a high level of competency in the core emotional / feeling intelligence realms. In fact, the professional landscape is littered by bright, would-be leaders with great technical skills that failed due to their lack of self-knowledge, lack of properly developed feelings intelligence, self-control, boundary setting, anger management, confidence and/or an inability to understand others and build trusting, empowering, mutually beneficial and productive relationships within their environment.
As an experienced life coach, business coach, counselor, teacher and trainer and as someone who has personally spent over 30 years in business, consulting, and leadership positions, I am convinced that building your awareness and mastery of the emotional intelligence realms will be some of the most valuable personal and professional development you may ever do! In fact, it would be life changing!
What is Emotional Intelligence?
Emotional Intelligence is the recent buzzword designed by some to make it exotic sounding. In plain and simple English it is a skill that we are all supposed to develop while we are on the planet. The essence of it all is that, you have to first understand how emotional / feelings intelligence works on the inside of you, for only then will you be able to understand others around you. This alone is a big step! Why do you react, why do you get angry, what to do when you get angry, why don't you express your feelings properly, why do you think expressing your feelings is weak, what is empathy and how to express and use it, what is compassion and how to express and use it, how to manage and process your anger / frustration, how to motivate you and others, how to get the best out of your partner and others, how to empower rather than break down / disempower, how to delegate responsibly, what is leadership and how to do it, how to use your power constructively instead of destructively, what does being sensitive mean, what does awareness mean and how to use it constructively, and so the list goes on and on ..... Once you have got that concept – and it is not an exceptionally difficult thing – you can learn how to apply the concept first on yourself and then on others.
Some technocrats like to spell Emotional Intelligence (E.I.) as a term that refers to all the non-IQ areas of human intelligence. Others like to call it EQ for emotional quotient. Social intelligence is the ability to monitor one's own and others' feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one's own thinking and action. In a business setting, these personal, social and managerial and leadership skills form the core of what separates star performers from the rest of the pack. Often called people skills, street smarts, common sense, savvy, etc. these wide array of skills are emerging as the most important competencies in business. Emotional / feeling intelligence should be taught at school, say most of my clients! Failing that at university! Instead everyone is sent out into the big wide world after our academic training, not understanding the very basics, and now has to somehow muddle on through and get it. Most fail along the way. This results in high personal problems - reflected in a high divorce rate around the world, strikes and strife at work, dictatorial management, staff conflict, low morale, and usually a high turn over of staff etc..... All that is required to solve most of these problems is to develop this feelings intelligence skill. Once you know the skill, life / work becomes a whole lot simpler, easier and better for you.
Why is Emotional Intelligence so important?
Years of solid academic research now support the very intuitive truth, that mastery of these personal and interpersonal skills are the single biggest factor contributing to an individual's success. Many of the most successful businessmen in the world all speak of the same thing in one form or another. If they can master it so can you. Yes technical skills are important but it won’t carry you past a certain level in the organization – ask thousands who tried before you and failed.
How do you measure Emotional Intelligence and what does it tell you?
There are many tests available that would test you for various skills that you may or may not have developed within yourself. I use a simple but powerful assessment questionnaire that reflects on the seven major areas of your life. It must be born in mind that this questionnaire is not the be all and end all – it is merely a guideline for you to work on these seven areas of your life. These seven areas form the basis of everyone on the planet, therefore if you can master each category then you would have developed a high degree of emotional intelligence. There are subscales that are also measured including your own levels of self-regard, assertiveness, self-awareness, independence, self-actualization, empathy, interpersonal relationships, reality testing, flexibility, problem solving, stress tolerance, impulse and several general mood indicators. This information can then be used to target coaching and development to raise their effectiveness in the areas that will contribute the most to their success.
Give me a Specific example how this might work?
Doing research, I found one report that indicated that research on more than 40,000 people have shown that the most successful senior managers score very high on self-regard, happiness, interpersonal relationships, reality testing and self-actualization. Thus if you are a manager who wants to excel, and the emotional intelligence assessment report indicates that your self-regard and reality testing scores are normal or sub-normal, a counselling program can be customized to help you significantly increase your competency in this area. (For a counsellor, key emotional intelligence areas include, understanding your feelings and how they work, ability to express your feelings, empathy, compassion, independence, assertiveness, boundary setting, self-regard and interpersonal relationships.)
Once you have improved your emotional / feeling intelligence you will be able to understand how you and other people work, and therefore are able to help and work with colleagues so much easier, and they with you. So all round there are many ways you benefit.
How can I learn more?
We have developed an outstanding program that you work at as homework and then you bring it into our session for further development and to overcome any triggers using your skills taught to you thus far..... Our process is practical and everyday use, yet highly effective and impactful. We will teach you this vital skill and weave it into your personal program to combine it with your other skills you have developed to date with us. Combining this skill with your boundary setting is really potent and highly effective and it results in you never have to lose your cool again. Isn't that neat? It is an amazing set of skills to have, it will propel you onto to great success in every facet of your life. We always say to our clients that this is one area where wide spread learning is essential. Do read about the subject from external sources as well. You can only round yourself off much better!!
There is a wealth of information available on Emotional Intelligence in books, on the Internet, attending workshops, etc. You can also visit the Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence at: Emotional Intelligence.
